Using a breast pump can be intimidating, but once you learn a few simple steps, you can pump with confidence and ease.
Step 1 - Flange Measurement
Measure for proper flange fit.
Use a round measurement tool to measure the tip of your nipple. This is your flange size in millimeters (mm). This number is a starting point and you may need to adjust up or down a couple of millimeters to get the perfect fit. Do not automatically add 2mm or whatever the internet told you.
Order your “Spectra compatible” flanges here.
Your nipple should fill the flange tunnel and move back and forth freely.
If you have any pain or reduced milk output, then it’s time to schedule a flange fit appointment. Schedule here.
Step 2 - Pump Assembly
Be sure to wash and sanitize all pump parts (except the tubing) before pumping
The tubing should never get washed.
Step 3 - Quick Start Guide
Spectra is a great pump because it offers a lot of setting options. However, all these options can be overwhelming at first. The bottom line is that pumping should be comfortable and efficient. There is no one-setting-fits-all here. You have to find the settings that work best for you.
Comfortable = No Pain. Zero. Zilch. Nadda.
Efficient = sprays of milk (like a shower head) and breast should feel empty in about 20 minutes
Experiment with the different settings until you find the one(s) that work best for you.
If one breast produces less than the other, optimize the pump settings for the lower producing side.
